It grants an international student the legal right to you. You can reside and study in the country for the duration of their academic program. The application process involves the following stages:

• Visa Approval Letter (VAL): You apply for a VAL online through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Use this letter to get a Single Entry Visa (SEV) at a Malaysian embassy. You can also get it via an e-visa portal to enter the country.
• The Student Pass & i-Kad: After you arrive in Malaysia and complete a mandatory health screening, your university will submit your passport to the Immigration Department to exchange your temporary visa for the actual sticker Student Pass. They will also issue your i-Kad (a biometric identification card for international students).

Who Can Apply for a Malaysia Student Pass?

The student visa is open for any global citizen who meets the baseline immigration and academic criteria. Here are the eligibility guidelines that apply for a Malaysia Student Pass :

• You have received a formal, unconditional offer of place (Offer Letter) from an approved government or private higher education institution in Malaysia.
• You are enrolling in a full-time academic course, including diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, master’s programs, PhDs, or approved intensive language tracks.
• You can demonstrate the financial capability to pay your tuition fees and cover your living costs during your stay.
• You are in good health and clear of any criminal record.

Documents Required for a Malaysia Student Pass

In fact, to get a student pass in Malaysia, you are required to gather all your necessary documents. Missing any documents or scanning errors can cause visa delays.  Are you applying through the EMGS system? You should arrange the following documents :

• Official Offer Letter: The formal acceptance letter issued by your chosen Malaysian university.
• Passport-Sized Photographs: Recent photos with a specific white background. Make sure that they adhere strictly to EMGS dimensions (35mm x 45mm).
• Complete Passport Copies: Scans of all pages of your passport, including blank pages and the cover. Your passport must have a minimum validity of 12 to 18 months from your intake date.
• Academic Certificates & Transcripts: Attested copies of your high school graduation certificates, diplomas, or prior university transcripts.
• Pre-Arrival Medical Report: A completed self-declaration health form. Students from certain regions may also require specific vaccination certificates.
• English Proficiency Scores: If required by your university course, certificates for IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent tests.

The Step-by-Step Application Process

The entire application process is handled through the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) portal, providing a simple and centralized way to complete all required steps. 

Step 1 - Receive Admission & Pay EMGS Fees

Once you accept your university offer letter, you or your university will create an account on the EMGS portal. You must upload your initial documents. Pay the EMGS visa processing fees online to initiate the application.

Step 2 - Await Your Visa Approval Letter (VAL)

The Malaysian Immigration Department reviews your portal data. You can track the progress percentage on the EMGS website. Once it reaches 100%, your digital Visa Approval Letter (VAL) will be issued and downloadable.

Step 3 - Apply for a Single Entry Visa (SEV)

With your VAL printed, apply for a Single Entry Visa (SEV). You can do this by visiting the nearest Malaysian Embassy/Consulate in the UAE or applying via the official Malaysian e-Visa platform. Avoid entering Malaysia on a tourist visa for educational purposes. 

Step 4 - Travel to Malaysia & Post-Arrival Medical Screening

Arrive at the Malaysian airport, present your SEV and VAL at immigration, and head to your university. Within 7 days of landing, you must undergo a mandatory post-arrival medical checkup at an EMGS-approved clinic.

Step 5 - Passport Endorsement & i-Kad Issuance

Once your medical clearance is approved, hand over your physical passport to your university's international student office. They will send it to Immigration to stamp your actual multi-entry Student Pass sticker and issue your official i-Kad.

Processing Time & Costs

The digital Visa Approval Letter (VAL) typically takes between 4 to 6 weeks. Count the moment your documents are successfully verified by EMGS. After you arrive for the purpose of study in Malaysia, the final passport sticker endorsement and i-Kad printing take an additional 2 to 3 weeks.

The total cost of securing a Malaysia student pass varies slightly depending on your university, nationality, and insurance tier. But generally the cost falls between RM 2,000 and RM 3,000 (approximately USD 450 to USD 680 / AED 1,650 to AED 2,500).

How Long Is a Malaysia Student Pass Valid?

In typical conditions, the Malaysian Immigration Department issues the Student Pass for a duration of one year (12 months) at a time. You can renew it every year. However, for students enrolled in specific highly rated universities or premium degree programs, immigration may grant a student pass that covers the entire duration of the course (e.g., 3 full years for a bachelor's degree), provided your passport has sufficient long-term validity.
